At a certain point, I went out on a date, and the guy, a very analytical type of guy, asked me what I do as a consultant. So I told him that I tell executives what to do. But I could see by the expression on his face that he didn’t understand what I was saying. This guy wasn’t an executive, you see. So I told him that I’m a fixer. This time he understood what I was saying. I knew this because he smiled and referenced “Michael Clayton,” a movie I’ve seen many times, which is about a fixer who works for a big law firm.
As Clayton, who’s played by George Clooney, explains of what he does:
“There's no play here. There's no angle. There's no champagne room. I'm not a miracle worker, I'm a janitor. The math on this is simple. The smaller the mess, the easier it is for me to clean up.”
That pretty much sums up what I do as a consultant.
In any case, I didn’t see the guy again.
In the end, he just wasn’t my type.
